5 Protective Wears Every Surgeon Must Own

The following are the 5 most important protective wears every surgeon must own.

Gloves

Gloves are the most essential piece of personal protective equipment (PPE). They work as a protective barrier for both you and your patient from the transfer of any harmful microbes. It is mandatory for surgeons to put-on these gloves when they deal with a patient. It is important for the surgeons to hygienically prepare their hands before gloving and clean their hands again after taking off the gloves and moving on to their next patient. Gloves are absolutely necessary for the surgeons, especially when they are working on an existing cut or small wound on their hand and if they have to touch any bodily fluid/secretion/excretion.

Boots

The operation theaters are usually messy, bloody, and gutsy places. It is mandatory for the surgeons to wear disposable waterproof boots as a protective measure from contamination with puss, blood or, amniotic fluid, etc. These Boots protect the feet completely. These are waterproof, flexible, and are in a precise size that is apt for everyone. These boots can also withstand cold weather and punctures. The soles of these boots also offer good traction to avert the surgeons from slipping and sliding down slopes. These boots also protect the wearer from any accidental spills.

Caps

Even clean, freshly washed hair can be contaminated when you are surrounded by a number of microbes. The surgical cap for the surgeons reduces the risk of hair falling into the sterile area during surgery. Surgeons should make sure that all of their hair is covered with this surgical cap before they proceed with scrubbing for surgery!

Apron

Some surgical operations may become a real mess, and thus the surgeon needs to keep themselves protected by wearing a waterproof apron. Surgical operations where a lot of bleeding or spill of bodily fluids is common like amniotic fluid, e.g., during a Caesarean section requires an apron.

Gowns

The protective disposable surgical clothes are considered one of the most essential protective items during surgical procedures. Sterile surgical clothes or gowns play an essential role in maintaining aseptic conditions by hindering the transfer of harmful microbes and chemicals to and from the patient.
